Nest Lamp

Making mess work

The core idea for our Nest lamp was what to do with long cables for floor and side lights. Instead of trying to hide them, we decided to make them a feature.

Bunching up the cables in a messy pile was, in our experimenting, the easiest (laziest) method we all felt was achievable by most users. On its own, it looked like a messy pile of cables, give it a story and the prop of a giant egg, and it transformed from a mess to a relatable form. A giant Nest.

We are also big fans of Gantri (@gantri) and their utilisation of 3D printing manufacture for lighting designs. So our Nest lamp design is led by Gantris design ethos.

The egg-shaped lamp uses a Plant Polymer body with a soft-touch matte finish. We wanted to avoid hard, unflattering lighting. So an opal shade produced from plant polymer plastics diffuses the light for a natural, evenly-distributed glow. Its novel extra-long cord gives the user broader freedom on the lamp's placement and interaction in its environment.
