Noodle Chair

Better together

I am a huge admirer of designer Philippe Starck. When I learned he would be a judge for the Architecture Chair competition hosted by Buildner, I couldn’t miss the chance to participate. Although architecture isn’t my specialty, creating a chair for such an iconic figure was a challenge I felt was doable.

My goal was to design something playful, customisable, and comfortable. Thus, "The Noodle Chair" was born. This modular seating design features tubular cushions, or "noodles," in two lengths that slot into a 3D-printed hexagonal frame—no tools required. This allows users to arrange the noodles to craft their own chair.

The frame is made using large-scale additive manufacturing, while the noodles consist of high-density foam wrapped in boucle fabric. For prototyping, I used miniature 3D printing and cardboard mock-ups to refine the design, ensuring ergonomic accuracy through testing.

For the competition, I initially chose a bold yellow fabric but later refined the design to a sleek black with a transparent frame for a more understated look. While I didn’t win a top spot, I was thrilled that my Noodle Chair was selected as the cover design for the competition’s hardcover book.

I hope a copy reaches Philippe Starck, allowing him to own a piece of my work. To me, that’s a success in itself.
